Director Spotlight: Gemma Osborne
We caught up with Gemma Osborne from igus UK, one of our newest BID Directors, to find out more about her day job, what inspired her to get involved with the BID and what she hopes to bring to the role.
Tell us a little about your role at igus – what does your day-to-day look like?
In my new role within the iPeople team at igus, I focus on supporting employee wellbeing and fostering a positive workplace culture. My responsibilities include managing personal and mental health concerns, enhancing employee engagement, overseeing recruitment and onboarding/offboarding processes, maintaining clock-in systems, assisting with probation reviews, tracking performance, and contributing to policy development. This role is centred around creating a supportive environment where employees feel valued, heard, and empowered.
What was your first experience of the BID?
My manager within Systems took me to a Health, Safety & Wellbeing Forum, and it started from there. I attend most events where I can and bring others along. It’s a great way to network and share best practice between businesses.
Were you familiar with BIDs before working at Brackmills?
No, I wasn’t. I came straight from college so had little knowledge of what a BID was. It’s been a real learning curve.
What made you want to get involved as a BID Director?
I want to be able to make a difference within the community and have a positive influence. I’m keen to learn as much as possible and grow my skills in all aspects of life, and having this opportunity allows me to do exactly that.
What strengths do you think you’ll bring to the role?
I believe I can bring a fresh perspective. I’m keen to help where possible and make suggestions that contribute towards actionable change around Brackmills.
What ideas do you have to support and take the BID forward?
I’d really like to contribute to progressing a continuity plan for all businesses on Brackmills. With uncertainties such as the weather, security and safety, I believe every business should feel confident that production can continue during an emergency. Working on this will improve relationships and trust towards the BID and security at each site. I’m also keen to get involved in any sustainability and wellbeing projects.
What would you say to anyone thinking about getting more involved with the BID?
It’s a great community to be part of. If you’re looking for answers on certain topics, someone will have an idea or a contact that could help you. Or if you just want to network and build better relationships with other businesses, it’s perfect. There are lots of activities and projects to get involved in, so there’s something for everyone.
What’s your favourite hobby outside of work?
I go to the gym and love being active. I have a large family so there’s always something going on.
Finally, what’s your favourite flavour of ice cream?
Pistachio or salted caramel, although I’m not supposed to have dairy so anything vegan works for me.
